Before we start this episode, we want to add our own condolences to all those that have been affected by the tragic accident that occurred in Saskatchewan, where the lives of fifteen members of the hockey community, many of them young players aged between sixteen and twenty one lost their lives in a crash involving the Humboldt Broncos as they travelled to take part in their own playoffs in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The whole hockey family is deeply shocked by these events, and you can find the Go Fund Me page to raise money for those most impacted here.

It’s awards season on the Door 14 Hockey Podcast as the boys give out the exciting Doorsie Awards. The guys talk playoff hockey, puppies, fishing boats, goalie interference and more.

The last two weeks since our last podcast saw the conclusion of the EIHL season, with the playoff quarter finals and playoff weekend being held in Nottingham.

This is how it all panned out (close your eyes Giants Fans!):

This week also brought to an end the NHL regular season, with John’s Nashville Predators scooping their first ever Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history, and not only that, but all four lads’ teams have made it to playoffs!

The EIHL and NIHL Playoffs were this last weekend, and saw the Cardiff Devils and the Basingstoke Bison walk away victorious. Read all about them by clicking the images below.

But better than all that….the Belfast Giants head back to the IIHF Continental Cup thanks to the Devils’ win at Playoffs. As the men is red will head back to the Champions Hockey League for a second consecutive year as EIHL League Champions, the Giants with their Challenge Cup victory snag the second European ticket and head on their fourth venture towards the illustrious dinner plate of victory!

John is VERY excited about what this means for his Stag-Do!

Meanwhile, in the first of many moves sure to come in the EIHL over the off season; both the Clan and the Steelers have made early announcements.

The Braehead Clan have moved to secure the services of former MK Lightning coach (and what seemed shoe-in for the Nottingham job) Pete Russell.

The Sheffield Steelers meanwhile, less than 24 hours from the end of a trophyless season ending, have waved goodbye to NINE of their imports in one day – including to everyones astonishment, netminder Ervins Mustikovs (top netminder in the EIHL this season) and what seemed like stalwarts such as Fitzgerald and (uugh) Fretter. Big changes on the way for the Sheffield orange-men it seems.

So, the NHL’s 2017-18 regular season is over, and playoffs beckon.

How do the D14 lads see it going? Probably no great surprises really!

The Chicago Blackhawks had some fun a couple weeks ago, as their backup…backup netminder got the call to the bench then took to the ice in his first career NHL game at the ripe old age of…36! The day-to-day accountant took the call following pre-game and mid-game injuries to both regular starting netminder Anton Forsberg and backup Collin Delia, and saw out the last 14:30 of the game, with a shutout no less, earning him the “man of the match” belt from his teammates that night!

John just wants to remind you all what the Predators did this last week….

[ultimate_heading main_heading=”Period Three – General Nockey News” main_heading_color=”#000000″ alignment=”left” spacer=”line_only” line_height=”1″ main_heading_style=”font-weight:bold;” main_heading_margin=”margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:15px;”][/ultimate_heading]

Because who doesn’t enjoy a birthday…and hockey…and doggos…? Not us, we love them!!! Sharks D-man Marc-Édouard Vlasic celebrated his 31st in style this last week!

Netminder Interference was back in the news too before the end of the regular NHL season…and John took exception to this one! Come on…really?! The Predators didn’t agree either!

The Anaheim Ducks proved what teamwork and dedication really means as they prepare to say farewell to retiring 34-year veteran equipment management.

[ultimate_heading main_heading=”Star Segment” main_heading_color=”#000000″ alignment=”left” spacer=”line_only” line_height=”1″ main_heading_style=”font-weight:bold;” main_heading_margin=”margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:15px;”][/ultimate_heading]

John kicked off the stars by, yup you guessed it, talking about the Predators! He singled out what could be effectively called the ‘Championship Goal’ as Ryan Johansen’s GWG against the Caps meant all they needed was a Panthers win in regulation against the Bruins to take the title…and they got it!

Marty went back to college with an NCAA goal for the Fightin’ Irish in the Frozen Four for his goal, one that came with only 4.4 ticks left in the game!

Dave continued the North American feel to the stars with a franchise record equalling goal from Staal…no not that one, the good one that plays for the Wild!

Aaron rounded the stars off – much to our shock – with a star game and all around ‘flyer’ of a game from his own Philly Flyers, as they secured not just playoff hockey, but leapt up to 3rd place and out of the wild-card spots against the Rangers!

[ultimate_heading main_heading=”Overtime” main_heading_color=”#000000″ alignment=”left” spacer=”line_only” line_height=”1″ main_heading_style=”font-weight:bold;” main_heading_margin=”margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:15px;”][/ultimate_heading]

This time, Overtime is dedicated to our second annual “Doorsies” awards….although this is the first time they’ll be heard as last year – it all went wrong in the recording!

Each of the lads presented a ‘special’ award, before we hit the big one and awarded out the Door 14 Hockey “Door-Knob of the Year Award”.

Here’s a quick run down of the winners!

John presented the “Ring My Bell” award to none other than (former) Steeler, Colton Fretter – for nothing else than being a bit of a Bell-End.

Aaron awarded his own Philadelphia Flyers with the “Whiplash Award” for the tumultuous up and down season they’ve put their fans through all season!

Dave gave the “Old-Door” award to his star goal winner – Eric Staal, for an outstanding year from the veteran (!?) 33 year old Huricane.

And Marty bestowed his “Choke of the Year” award to….you guessed it, the perennial under-achievers of the EIHL, the Braehead Clan! Even as the only nominee, he was worried they still wouldn’t win….

That brought us to the big one…the one everyone wants to win, but only one can walk away with – and the field this year was stacked!

Nominees included;

Matt Nickerson – for his naughty behaviour;
The Edinburgh Capitals (former) management team – for…you know…sucking all year…again, and;
The Guildford Flames organisation for their total reckless disregard to the right of all fans to own and wear a team jersey.

But there could only be one winner, and this years Door 14 Hockey “Door-Knob” of the Year Award went to….

THE ELITE ICE HOCKEY LEAGUE!!!

The guys could see no other winner after the shocking year the league has had: from mid-season rule changes, the alterations to the playoff seedings  -also, mid-season (why do we have conferences again?) – and the entire DoPS fiasco.
We could think of no one person or organisation that better deserves this illustrious award or embodies the spirit of it better, and we look froward to the opportunity to award it to a League representative in the near future!

Did we miss anyone in this years’ awards? Have you got a special award you would present this year? Let uk know on Twitter!
