Episode 65 – Return Of The Pod

After a VERY long hiatus, the boys return with a new episode. This week the lads look back at all things NHL during COVID times, look ahead to the 2020/21 EIHL season, and gush over Disney’s Might Ducks Game Changers. Plus all the usual news bit and features you have come to expect from the Door 14 Hockey Podcast.

Period One - Local Coverage

In period one, the lads discussed all things EIHL Elite Series as well as the huge news that a new EIHL season is on the horizon for September 2021!

But, that comes with trepidation, as the Glasgow Clan arena situation could leave us with a nine team league once again… If you’d like to sign their petition, you can do so here.

Finally, the guys look at the change in brand and backroom staff at the new‘ NIHL team in Leeds.

Period Two - International Hockey

After almost a year and a half off, what happened this day (19th May) in Hockey History? Well, it was a first, as Philly became the first expansion team to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup!

After such a long hiatus that included the entire 2020/21 NHL regular season, the guys chat about the final standings as well as looking to the recently underway Playoffs. The guys even made their predictions for the Cup, check out our Twitter or Instagram to see who the guys went for!

The expansion of the NHL also took another major step forward, as the Seattle Kraken made their first player signing ahead of the expansion draft in July.

Meanwhile, Team GB are off to Latvia for the IIHF World Championships, and with Coach Russel opting to make himself unavailable after spending nine months abroad away from family, the Giant’s own Adam Keefe and former Panthers coach Corey Neilson step up as co-head coaches. Coach Keefe is staying grounded in his predictions though as GB start their tournament this weekend against Russia.

Back at home, the Cardiff Devlis, earlier this year announced as the EIHL participant in the Champions Hockey League found out who they’d be facing in the first round following the competition draw.

Period Three - General Nockey News!

Not much for Nockey News this time around, but the guys wanted to highlight the only hockey that’s gotten them through multiple lockdowns, The Mighty Ducks Game Changers!

But there’s been some local graft too as Matt Harvey came through once again with some epic renders of an alternative Belfast Giants logo and jerseys. All hail angry Finn!

Overtime

Always ones to highlight the good work of others, the guys take a moment in the podcast to mention one special person and his awesome big sister in particular.

Anyone who knows Ethan McClean knows that his fight with Duchennes has continued through the Coronavirus pandemic, but his big sister Amie as  taken it on herself to give him some of his freedom back by fundraising for an all terrain wheelchair. Starting in April with a 5km a day every day and moving on to an epic 30+ mile hike from home to the SSE Arena in Belfast! Amie is well down the road in her fundraiser, but she still needs people to help her out as much as possible in these trying times. If you can spare a couple of quid, please head over to her Go Fund Me page and donate to an excellent cause.

For all her hard work, we’re pleased to award Amie with the first D14 Star Award for 2021. Keep up the good work Amie!

The ABC's of Hockey

Once again, and after the longest period of awful sleep due to no bedtime stories, we finally return to the ABC’s of Hockey!
